Every generation has a new trait and term used to define them.

In the 1940s to mid-1960s we had Baby Boomers and from the mid-1960s to early 1980s we had Generation X.

People born between the early 1980s and the early 2000s are considered Millennials, also known as Generation Y.

This is their main make up:

  • 75% have a profile on a social media network
  • 4 in 10 have a tattoo, while 1 in 4 have a piercing somewhere other than an earlobe
  • They feel government can do more to solve problems
  • 1 in 4 are not affiliated with any religion
  • 6 in 10 were raised by both parents
  • Becoming the most educated generation
  • 52% feel that being a good parent is the most important thing in their life
  • The Most likely to self-identify as liberal
  • 24% feel technology use sets them apart from other generations
  • 83% put the mobile phone next to the bed
  • 58% feel that immigrants strengthen the country
  • 63% feel that adult children should let an elderly parent live in their home

Reports say 67% of Millennials use a combination of mobile and desktop to consume digital media; with 81% of them owning a smartphone.

When looking deeper into their smartphone use, Android (50%) is the most popular followed by iPhone (44%).

Facebook remains the number one social media network in this age group (91%); however, Millennials are reaching out more and more to other social networks.

Furthermore, Millennials utilize search and word-of-mouth before making purchases; they will consult friends through social channels before making a product decision. Additionally, they will take to social media to talk to connections about products and services.

Finally, Millennials do not like to watch commercials, 90% of them skip ads on recorded television and they view more television online.
